What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is very simply a wonderfully natural state of perfect relaxation.  You are not asleep or unconscious, as is sometimes portrayed by filmmakers.  In a state of hypnosis your mind becomes more focused on a particular thought or idea.  You will probably find you have heightened awareness and greater recall of past events.

Is hypnosis safe?

Yes, it is completely safe.  It is absolutely impossible for anyone to ‘get stuck’ and not be able to come out of hypnosis, and there is no known record of anyone being physically or mentally harmed as a direct result of hypnosis itself.

What will it feel like to be hypnotised?

There is no single ‘feeling’ of being hypnotised, it can be different from person to person.  But you will feel very relaxed and yet be completely aware of everything around you.

How does hypnotherapy work?

During the hypnotherapy session the therapist uses words and phrases that help you to completely relax, giving you access to your subconscious mind so that suggestions can be made to improve your life.   Going into hypnosis depends on your willingness to be guided into this altered state of consciousness.   You may wish to improve your confidence, deal with a fear or phobia, smoking cessation, driving test nerves, have a fear of flying, public speaking – the list is endless.

What happens during hypnoanalysis?

During the hypnoanalysis session you will be able to recall past events that you thought you had ‘forgotten’ – in fact these memories have usually been suppressed by your subconscious mind.  By using advanced analytical skills I will be able to bring these ‘forgotten’ negative memories to the surface so they can be examined with an adult perspective, and their effect on you as an adult can be neutralised, thus allowing you to release old patterns of behaviour and reach your full potential.

Hypnoanalysis is often used when dealing with issues that originate from childhood or adolescence when we were exposed to the views and negative thoughts of our elders such as parents, teachers, doctors, relatives etc.  The negative ‘programming’ we received in those early years lasts throughout our lives unless challenged and neutralised in cases where it is affecting our well being.

It’s never to late to have a happy childhood (Dr Richard Bandler)

Can you make me do or say things I don’t want to?

Absolutely not – you are in control at all times.  You can stop the session whenever you choose.  There is no question of someone being able to control, influence or manipulate you in any way.

If during therapy you are given a suggestion that your subconscious mind does not like it will reject it, whereas if it is given a reasonable suggestion that will be of benefit to you it will be accepted.

How long does a session last?

A session normally lasts an hour.  Smoking cessation lasts approximately 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How many sessions will I need?

This can vary from person to person depending upon what they hope to achieve.  Simpler problems can sometimes be dealt with in one or two sessions, whereas problems that are deeply seated may need hypno analytical work which would normally take longer – as a guideline about six to twelve sessions.  After the first consultation I will be able to give a clearer idea of the number of sessions involved.

Will I be able to recall what happened in the session?

You will remember and be aware of everything in the sessions, in fact you will probably be more aware than usual.  You may find your mind wanders during the session because you are so calm and relaxed and yet you will still be able to remember details of the event.
